I’m on the planning committee for a special fundraiser hosted next weekend by the Austin Food Blogger Alliance and Alamo Drafthouse– a screening of the adorable chick flick, WAITRESS, to benefit SafePlace, a local non-profit that helps end sexual and domestic violence through safety, healing, prevention and social change. The movie is at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar next Sunday, August 21st at 1 PM and tickets are available here. As of this posting there are only a few tickets left, so please hurry and help us sell out!
Starring Keri Russell, WAITRESS tells the inspiring story of Jenna, a diner waitress and pie aficionado who overcomes adversity and escapes an abusive marriage. Alamo Drafthouse Chef John Bullington and AFBA member Michael Chu (Cooking For Engineers) will prepare Michael’s award winning pecan pie recipe for sale at the movie, with ticket and pie sales going to SafePlace. Chef Bullington is on the Advisory Board of the Food Blogger Alliance and will be introducing the film and Michael’s pie at the event.
After the film, Austin Food Blogger Alliance will raise additional funds for SafePlace by selling whole pies in a mini-bake sale in the theater lobby. Businesses donating pies include pie visionaries such as Blue Bonnet Cafe, Cake & Spoon, Dagar’s, Fleming’s, Pie Fixes Everything, The Pie Society, Royers Round Top Cafe, Silver Whisk, SugaPlump Pastries, Sugar Mamas Bakeshop, Texas Pie Kitchen, Tiny Pies,Upper Crust Bakery, and The Wine & Food Foundation.
You can buy tickets to the movie through the Drafthouse’s website, and don’t forget to bring your checkbook that day to purchase a whole pie after the movie. If you can’t make the screening, please consider donating back-to-school supplies or making a cash gift to SafePlace through their website.
